As a sub-tropical country, Egypt has four seasons each year. Uniquely winter will be very cold and summer is also very hot. This causes people in Egypt to like and often drink, especially flavored drinks. This is what is touted as a typical Egyptian drink. Egyptian karkade is very thick and sour, rich in taste. Karkade is actually an herb to lower blood pressure instantly. Karkade can be drunk cold or hot. But many would agree that it is the perfect drink for hot summer days.

This drink uses boiled and dried flower petals, with added sugar to taste. Usually the rosella flower used is dark red or magenta. It is consumed both hot and cold. It has a sour, cranberry-like taste. Uniquely karkade or hibiscus juice is a refreshing drink which is considered to have been popular and favored among the ancient Egyptian pharaohs.

Sobia

This popular milk drink is usually sold in sugarcane juice shops. It has a distinctive taste with a sweet and refreshing coconut taste. Usually sobia enthusiasts increase during the month of Ramadan. Sobia is very easy to find alongside other refreshing sweet drinks, which are usually found in the month of Ramadan.

Sobia becomes one of the main elements of the table at Eid celebrations when delicious dishes and cakes are served. Its freshness is further appreciated when religious celebrations take place during the hot summers. Sobia has a sweet taste made from rice and coconut milk. It is drunk directly without special techniques.

During the holy month, sobia is sold in plastic bottles by street vendors, at stands, kiosks and in juice shops. It is also common to see the famous drink offered in a plastic bag, closed with a rubber band like iced drinks in Indonesia. To open it, people simply make a small hole in the bottom of the plastic.

Some manufacturers may also like to add food coloring for a more festive touch. Therefore, it is not uncommon in Egypt to find yellow, blue or pink sobia bottles. In addition, if you are someone who prefers to make it at home, you can also buy Sobia in ready-to-use powder form, which is mixed directly with water. You can also get it all year round in most of the juice shops in Egypt.

Qamaraddiin

Qamar al-Din or Qamaraddiin is made from dried apricots which are previously made into a paste. The sour taste and served very thickly are its own characteristics. This drink is very famous in the month of fasting and actually comes from Syria. However, it is also very popular among the Egyptian people.

There are two versions of the story regarding the origins of Qamar al-Din. The first story is because this drink was first made by Qamar al-Din who was very charming or handsome. Qamar al-Din’s handsomeness is likened or presupposed to a luminous moon. This is why it is named (qamar قمر), namely the month. So that the name Qamar al-Din is based on the month and the name, Qamar al-Din.

The second version is because Dried Apricot Paste is only available in the market during the fasting month. And this is true, in Egypt, Qamar al-Din is only widely available during the fasting month. It is for this reason that it is called Qamar al-Din, i.e. Light of the Moon of Religion. In our opinion, this second version is the closest and most reasonable.
